Salta is an historical city in the north west of argentina founded in the 16th century. It is considered the most Spanish city in Argentina. It has a mix of Spanish style multi-coloured churches and “Gaucho” (cowboy) culture. It’s a pretty laid back place and is perfect for chilling for a few days.
There is also a museum with the preserved bodies of children sacrificed by the Inca 500 years ago. Many people find this a bit creepy.
It’s possible to make days trips in the surrounding countryside. You can visit traditional gaucho villages, see colourful mountain scenery, vast cactus plantations and salt flats. Altitudes can climb to over 4000m, so be prepared if you are prone to altitude sickness.
North of Salta is the famous Cerro de los Siete Colores (Hill of the 7 colours). It’s a popular tourist spot and renowned in Argentina. Just go over the border to Bolivia, however, and you’ll find hundreds of such rock formations.
