Bologna is a city in the north east of Italy.
It is famous for its towers and porticoes. Porticoes are long porch like entrances to buildings with a roof supported by columns. Nowhere in the world are there so many porticoes as in Bologna. Many are ornately decorated. They have been declared a World Heritage Site.
The Towers of Bologna are medieval structures. The reason behind the construction of them is not known, but it is suspected they were for defensive purposes. The two most famous are both leaning (due torri).
Bologna is also a foodie destination. It is most well-known for its meat-based pasta sauce called, wait for it…. Bolognese! Note, it is usually served with tagliatelle and not spagetti, fools!
The centerpiece is the Piazza Maggiore which is dominated by a huge church, the Basilica di San Petronio. The Piazza (square) is flanked by several grand old Palazzio (palaces), such as the Palazzo d’Accursi (city hall), the Palazzo dei Banchi (former banking centre) and the Palazzo del Podestà (former civic offices).
