Te Anau
Te Anau is a small town in the south of the South Island in New Zealand. It is located on the banks of eponymous Lake. It is the gateway to Fiordland and Milford Sound. Not as touristy as Queenstown or Wanaka, it is still well worth visiting.
Milford Sound and Fiordland
Fiordland is a remote wilderness area in the south west corner of the South Island. It is the least populated part of the country. It is also the rainiest. It rains once every 3 days on average. The scenery is absolutely stunning. In addition to the fiords, you will find snow-capped mountains, dense rainforest and spectacular waterfalls. It is home to several native bird species.
In my opinion, Milford Sound is the most beautiful part of New Zealand. You can reach there in couple of hours from Te Anau by car. You can take a cruise around the Fiord. Several boat companies operate there. Make sure to check timetables and availability in peak seasons.
