The Templo Mayor is the ruins of one of the major temples of the Mexica (Aztecs) in their capital Tenochtitlan which was trashed by the Spanish and built over to make current day Mexico city. The ruins are located right in the historic centre not far from the main square (Zocalo) and cathedral. They were not rediscovered until the 20th century and excavation/restoration did not start until the 1970s. The artifacts displayed below are exhibited in the adjacent museum.
